<image:title>Who is Four Corners? - Anna Riling, PG MS</image:title>
<image:caption>Four Corners Mapping was established in 2019 by Anna Riling, PG MS. Anna is a seasoned GIS professional and internationally recognized cartographic designer with extensive experience delivering innovative and award-winning cartographic solutions for a wide range of clients and projects. Anna’s work reflects her belief in the power and impact of beautiful maps to advocate for meaningful environmental causes and the protection of the natural world. A cartographer as well as a licensed Professional Geologist with two decades of experience as a practicing geologist, she combines analytical precision with carefully crafted elements of design that provide context, invite inquiry, and distill the unique story of a place. Anna is dedicated to community involvement and served on the board of GIS Colorado, where she designed and implemented two statewide Mapping Contests. In 2018, she founded and now runs the Durango GIS Group, a valuable resource for the GIS community, bringing local GIS professionals and students together for trainings, presentations, and networking. She shares her life with her husband and two children in Durango, Colorado, where they take every chance they can get to escape to the refuge of the mountains, canyons, and rivers of the American West.</image:caption>

<image:caption>The Geologic Trail Map series presents a rock-centric view of popular Grand Canyon trails, combining a trail map with a geologic guidebook. This map turns the trail into a geologic trip log, pointing out juicy tidbits of geology as you hike, from fossilized spider tracks to the Great Unconformity. There is also a ton of information about the geologic history of the Grand Canyon, with infographics and visuals that answer questions like “Why are there no dinosaurs in the Canyon?” and “How was the Canyon formed?” Now anyone can be prepared to dole out unsolicited lithologic lessons to unsuspecting passersby! <image:caption>The Colorado Avalanche Information Center (CAIC) provides world-class backcountry forecasting, mountain weather reports, education, and ongoing avalanche research. CAIC staff identified the need for a refined, brand-aligned basemap to improve the clarity and usability of their online forecast tools. I designed a custom basemap to launch in winter 2025, tailored specifically for winter recreation. The map features a subtle icy-blue palette and a clean backdrop for overlaying avalanche danger ratings from the North American Public Avalanche Danger Scale. The basemap includes key elements for winter users, including trailheads, ski areas and lifts, backcountry huts and yurts, over-snow routes, forecasting stations, Forest Service winter roads, major peaks, contours, woodlands, and wilderness boundaries. Every feature, icon, and label was custom designed, unified by a consistent palette and typography. The result is a modern, informative, and visually engaging basemap that refreshes CAIC’s classic products and enhances the user experience for backcountry travelers.</image:caption>

<image:caption>I created a two-page map spread for Wild for Good, a campaign by Wilderness Workshop to highlight ten iconic landscapes they are working to permanently protect. Designed as a centerpiece for a glossy print report, the map serves as an artistic visual guide rather than a navigational tool—showcasing the locations of these special places in a way that is clear, engaging, and inspiring. The map's branding is aligned with the campaign's unique logo and a custom north arrow-scale bar incorporates the Wilderness Workshop’s mountain icon. The distinctive legend uses thumbnail images for each feature, instead of the usual symbol list, conveying context and underscoring the importance of visual storytelling in map design.</image:caption>

<image:caption>This poster size map was created for Discover Gilbert to highlight the unique features and history of the Town of Gilbert, Arizona. It features bright and inviting photos with callouts describing the Town's riparian preserves, foodie destinations, and vibrant art and culture scene. It's rich history is displayed in a photojournalistic timeline, describing the evolution from "Hay Shipping Capital" to "Phoenix's Coolest Suburb". Parks, golf courses, art locales, and cultural centers are located via a reference grid based on the main streets, in turn based on the originally surveyed Sections, a design choice that marries cartographic function with place-based storytelling. The design borrows the bright and lively palette and unique fonts of the Discover Gilbert branding, with these design elements employed throughout the map. Locator insets provide geographic context, including drive time and direction to popular destinations. A silhouette of the Superstitions and the famous Water Tower grounds the map with a sense of place.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Are you a cross-country skier? What would you want in a map of cross-country ski trails? I asked myself this question, and came up with this map I designed for the Durango Nordic Ski Club in the beautiful San Juan Mountains of southwestern Colorado. For one thing, it needs to fold down to a size I can put in my pocket. Illustrated folding directions? Bonus! Trails clearly marked and labeled by difficulty. Important features like main building, ski waxing bench, and property boundary prominently displayed. Elevation profiles of recommended routes, complete with total vert, high and low points. Lovely winter-themed terrain and snowy trees to set the scene. Oh, and one other thing--a FREE georeferenced version that I can use on my phone in the Avenza Maps App!</image:caption>

<image:caption>WINNER! Best Layout, Esri Map Gallery 2025! ***This map is also featured on Esri's Maps.com!*** The Diné-led non-profit Tó Nizhóní Ání entrusted me to make this map of Black Mesa (Dził Yíjiin)—a vast, sloping plateau that rises over 3,000 feet from the Little Colorado River, deep in the heart of the Navajo and Hopi Reservations in northeastern Arizona. Tó Nizhóní Ání, or "Sacred Water Speaks", has long worked to protect Black Mesa's water sources from industrial use and waste, leading the effort to stop Peabody Coal from using the Navajo Aquifer—the only source of potable groundwater in the region. This map helps tell the story of those threats and the ongoing efforts to safeguard water in this beautiful high desert landscape. As this project unfolded, it became clear that the documentation of wells and springs on Black Mesa is fragmented and incomplete. Historical windmills shown on pre-mine topographic maps and springs recalled by elders are missing from modern records. The challenge of simply navigating the disconnected network of dirt roads likely contributes to this gap. Without an accurate well record, the challenge of fighting for water rights increases exponentially. It is essential that all water sources are correctly cataloged, including the historical ones that have slipped through the cracks. For Tó Nizhóní Ání, this map is more than just a reference—it's an invaluable resource for Black Mesa residents, helping them navigate the region's remote roads, visualize interconnected water systems, and advocate for their rightful access to water. <image:caption>Hot off the press! The the 2025 Discover Gilbert Travel Guide features several of my maps! The Town of Gilbert, Arizona started as a hay-shipping nexus and is now one of Arizona's hippest travel destinations. This was a fun project with a wild color palette and super fancy fonts. I think my favorite map is the Spring Training stadiums that's shaped like a baseball diamond! One of my favorite features of a map in the works is a reference grid of tapered crosses (purple!) that uses the existing checkerboard-like street network, which follow section lines originally surveyed in the 1860s.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Excited to share my contribution to a significant achievement for water conservation in Southwest Colorado! I produced detailed maps for the successful $25.6M grant proposal awarded January 2025 to the Southwestern Water Conservation District by the Bureau of Reclamation's Upper Colorado River Basin Environmental Drought Mitigation Program. This funding will support 17 critical projects in the Dolores and San Juan River Basins, advancing drought resiliency through wetland and fen restoration, invasive species removal, fish passage and habitat connectivity, and more. The maps helped visualize and communicate the scope and scale of these projects and the successful contribution of restoration efforts to mitigate the effects of drought. Collaboration and innovation are key in securing meaningful environmental funding, and I'm honored that my cartographic contribution helped to support this impactful initiative.</image:caption>

What's at stake? Development of lands with important desert tortoise habitat, right up to peoples' homes and property, as well as the Ash Meadows National Wildlife Refuge and Big Dune Area of Critical Environmental Concern. The theme for the night was "River Pirates", and the event featured pirate-themed games, music, and activities, including a real treasure hunt using this map! Participants got the map as a scroll tied with red thread, then used it to find and decode the secret message on each of four clues using the cipher on the neatline to find the “key” to unlock the treasure chest. The key’s final clue asked them to tell their favorite pirate joke, and then they could pick out a treasure. This map was a joy to produce, and brought out the kid in everyone!</image:caption>

<image:caption>A River's Reach, created for the Yampa White Green Basin Roundtable, tells the unique and complex story of water in the Yampa White Green Basin in northwest Colorado, a region known for some of the last free-flowing rivers in the American West. From a wild hydrology driven by snowpack and runoff to novel water rights for fish and recreation to the collaboration of seemingly disparate water users in a time of rising drought and declining flows, this StoryMap shows the care and dedication it takes to steward water in the Basin and beyond, now and into the future. The project received Honorable Mention in the Digital category of the 2025 Cartography and Geographic Information Society Map Design Competition.</image:caption>

<image:caption>FINALIST in the 2023 ArcGIS StoryMap Competition! The Colorado River earned the unenviable title of "Most Endangered River of 2023" on American Rivers' annual report. In the face of serious risk from climate change and outdated water management, the Bureau of Reclamation is weighing next steps into an uncertain future. Actions taken to manage the Colorado River's water will directly impact the Grand Canyon, where flows have already been reduced and a scenario of no water flowing past Glen Canyon Dam looms near. To bring the story of the Grand Canyon and its river to the fore, in partnership with American Rivers, Environmental Defense Fund, and Water for Arizona Coalition, Four Corners Mapping & GIS produced the Story Map, "Caught in the Middle: A river between two dams and the future of the Grand Canyon". <image:caption>On August 5, 1776, the Domínguez-Escalante Expedition entered Colorado at Carracas and traveled through what is now the western slope of Colorado, entering Utah on September 12, 1776. Led by Franciscan friars Atanasio Domínguez and Silvestre Vélez de Escalante and assisted by indigenous guides of the Timpanogos (Ute) peoples, the expedition produced a detailed journal account, illustrations, and maps of the terrain of the American West. The volunteers of the Domínguez-Escalante Expedition Education Project (DEEEP) have worked tirelessly to research and tell the story of the expedition in Colorado. <image:caption>I created this Member Map for the Durango GIS Group's website using Esri ArcGIS Dashboards and a Survey123 form. Because if a bunch of GIS nerds don't have a map to look at, what are we even doing?! The Dashboard has just two elements; a List that is populated by fields from the survey, and a map with popups likewise populated from the survey, complete with photo attachment. I employed some Arcade shenanigans in the popup, to create conditional responses, list-formatting, "mailto:" syntax, and more. The dashboard's Layer Actions select and filter the corresponding entry in the List and the Map. I added it to the Member Map page in the Google Site by inserting the Dashboard as an Embed element, and I also provided a link to a "mobile friendly version" that opens in a new window. Want to be added to the map? Well, if you're in the Durango area, we'd love it if you joined our group, but there is also a link to the survey on the Member Map page. Check it out!</image:caption>
